One of the worst train accidents in Canadian History took place in Almonte on December 27th 1942. A train carrying Canadian troops headed overseas struck the rear of the local train stopped in Almonte, crowded with holiday passengers returning to Ottawa. There were 39 deaths and over 150 injured.
